Welcome to ICOSSAR 2021-2022

Reliability, risk and resilience of structures and infrastructure systems have been the main concerns to the safety of properties and human life and the sustainability of human society. They are still key challenges due to, on the one hand, the increasing frequency and intensity of natural and man-made disasters in recent years such as earthquakes, tropical cyclones, flood and industrial accidents, and on the other side, the increasing size, complexity, multi-field and intra-and-between-system coupling effects, and enhanced performance demand of structures and infrastructure systems. Quantification and propagation of uncertainties, performance assessment and decision-making under risk associated with these disasters and the refined analysis and control of structures and infrastructure systems are the critical tools to address the challenging problems. They stimulate the frontier research topics in the community of structural safety and reliability in various fields including civil engineering, mechanical engineering, hydraulic engineering, offshore and marine engineering, and aeronautics and aerospace engineering, etc. In particular, the past decade has witnessed emerging new thoughts, perspectives, ideas, and methods in structural safety and reliability, inspired by big data, super-computing and AI, as well as from new advances of mechanics, mathematics, material, and related multi-discipline fusion.

The 13th International Conference on Structural Safety and Reliability (ICOSSAR 2021-2022) was scheduled to be held on site in June of 2021 in Shanghai, P. R. China. Due to the huge uncertainty caused by Covid-19, however, the conference has been postponed twice to seek for an on-site or a hybrid format. But it is finally decided to be held as a Virtual conference with a single main venue on site during 14-17 September 2022 in Shanghai, P. R. China. More than 600 scientists, researchers, engineers, practitioners and educators from 41 countries attended the conference and participated in discussions and communications, including 4 Keynote lectures, 3 Early Career lectures and over 490 oral presentations in parallel sessions. These lectures concerned the safety, risk and reliability of structures and systems in the following fields: civil and structural engineering; mechanical engineering; aerospace engineering; marine/offshore engineering; industrial engineering; nuclear engineering; materials science; environmental engineering; architecture; urban planning; computer sciences; geosciences; and social sciences, providing the state-of-the-art and state-of-the-practice, as well as the emerging theory and technology and new trends, in structural safety and reliability in the above various fields.

We are striving to enhance the brand influence of ICOSSAR and maintain its leading position in the field of structural safety and reliability. We are grateful to the contributors from the participants and volunteers who make this conference successful.
