Abstract of the special session:
The sustainable development of urban communities requires strengthening the resilience of the built environment and all service systems, and the introduction of novel standards for design and construction of buildings and infrastructural systems. This requires incorporating urban systems, mobility systems, energy systems, environmental systems, communication systems and human systems. Novel frameworks, methods and tools for the analysis, the optimal design and the management of engineering systems are, then, needed, capable of coping with their complexity and uncertainty.
This special session is dedicated to sharing the ongoing research in this topical and multidisciplinary area. The field of applications can range from buildings, bridges, dams, transportation networks, water networks, power grids, port structures and marine systems up to entire urban communities. Contributions relevant to novel methods of uncertainty quantifications, risk and reliability analysis, decision making under uncertainty, performance-based engineering, artificial intelligence, structural health monitoring are welcome, both motivated or illustrated by real examples.
