Abstract of the special session:
Present-day societal, political, economic, and sustainability constraints combined with climate change effects and associated increases in natural hazards and man-made demands have necessitated a review of the basic tenants of structural safety assessment processes. These processes are evolving from satisfying point-in-time reliability criteria for individual components to a more comprehensive risk-based approach that accounts for changes in the overall performance of a structural system over its life-cycle while taking into consideration the consequences of failures due to unforeseen events on the integrity of an individual structure, the entire infrastructure network, and the affected community. The objective of this Symposium is to bring together:

  1. Researchers working on developing probabilistic models for life-cycle assessment of deteriorating structure and infrastructure systems;
  2. Researchers and engineering experts developing reliability-based performance indicators to assess the safety of structural systems and networks;
  3. Researchers and practitioners working on optimizing inspection and maintenance decisions under severe uncertainties;
  4. Researchers and infrastructure owners and managers making risk-informed decisions that ensure the sustainability and resilience of infrastructure systems and affected communities.

The goal of this symposium is to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art in available probabilistic models and tools for risk-informed decision making processes over the life-cycle of structure and infrastructure systems.
